When I travel by night in trains, I normally take the air conditioned coach. That is a small luxury I allow myself because they are usually cleaner than the non-air-conditioned coaches and the toilets are not totally unusable and somehow I had imagined a higher safety factor in these, as you don't expect people who can afford the fare to walk away with your boxes in the middle of the night when everyone is asleep. And the railway official on duty normally ensures that persons without a ticket do not linger in the coach. Except for the inevitable cases of inefficiency in government-run operations such as not carrying enough number of blankets and sheets to cover all the berths or the air conditioner /fan not working, my experience with overnight trains in a/c coaches has been quite tolerable.
Last night my daughter-in-law and I took the Bangalore mail from Chennai. We both had upper berths but we usually manage to request and exchange seats with any males in the middle or lower berths. As luck would have it, the other 4 seats were allotted to a family with two children lass than 10 years of age and they carried so much luggage that they used up all the luggage space under and between the seats. So they cited these and refused to exchange seats with us. But the side berths were allotted to young men in their twenties and one of them willingly agree to take one of our upper berths. Since my daughter-in-law's sinuses were acting up we didn't want her closer to the a/c vent and so she took the lower berth and I went up.
The train departed on schedule at 11:15.I set the alarm for 4:30 so as not to miss Bangalore cantonment at 4:40 and by midnight all was quiet. I woke up around 3:45 with a start when a lady in the next coupe shouted "Bharat, Look at this boy! What kind of a boy is this, he should be lynched". And she quickly walked down the compartment. Both Akila and I sat up and asked her what happened.
Apparently she had opened her eyes a few minutes earlier and found this boy bent over her and by the time she was fully awake, he grabbed her breast. When he realised that she was awake, he quickly got away even as she tried to hold his shirt and catch him. That was when she called out to her husband at the end of the compartment so he could catch the boy. The husband was fast asleep and by the time she walked down to trace the culprit he had disappeared under his blanket. So we told the lady to get the coach guard so he could help her find him and the guard was nowhere in the coach.
The lady was definitely into her 40s if not more and if this is her fate I wonder how safe younger girls are in these trains. It is possible that one of the younger girls in the side berth was his intended target as he might have imagined them to be timid and hence an easy prey.
I wonder what exactly were his intentions:
Is this a manifestation of what can happen if young people do not have opportunities to interact with the opposite sex in a healthy way?
Is this the result of the extremes of repression as a result of the increasing moral policing in the system?
Is this perverted fascination with the female anatomy a result of the refusal to impart sex education to young people?
A young man who can afford a 450 rupee ticket on a train is certainly not from the dark alleys of deprived society. He must be educated and is probably even employed. This is definitely not lack of education. This is a serious psychological problem, symptom of a mental illness - this desperate need to feel a female's body even for a few seconds in a public place. Why is this happening to our youth in our 'culture' with its high 'moral' standards and with the entire 'system' (education, politics, society and police) working over-time passing laws to curb women's rights in a bid to ensure that these standards are not violated?
And talking about the system, where was the guard on duty? How safe are our trains for women and the irony of it all is that it should happen at a time when a lady is in charge of the ministry!
The lady in question was covered from head to toe in a loose Salwar-Kurta ensemble and she was not a 'loose' woman in a PUB. She was inside a train with a valid ticket. What safety does she have from such predators and what is the so called SYSTEM doing about it? Is even a Burkha any defence against such perverts? or should women stay within the four walls and not venture on trains too?
Shame on you Indian Railways if you cannot offer basic minimum safety to your women passengers. Shame on you, India!

Very sad, very sad! I always used to be a little anxious if I had the lower berth/middle berth in trains. As a kid I enjoyed middle berths because they gave you that "bunk bed" sort of feeling. As i grew up I started preferring Upper berth because they were relatively safer. Not that anything happened to me in trains, but somehow the conditioning was to always be careful in public places and be on guard. It is a pity we live in such circumstances..
Indeed very sad. I wonder why we get to hear so many incidents in day to day life. I question myself whether we had such things happening 3-4 decades back, when the people were less literate than now. How come people had a sense of ethics and morality then and today when we are more exposed to latest technologies, education, better standards of living, we end up behaving in such a way.girls/ladies should speak out and bring it to everyone's notice when something of this sort happens, instead of resisting it. I am glad the lady in your train did that. Atleast it will send a message to everyone, that doing such acts is dangerous. Having said that, these are just temporary measures. How are we going to the moral standards amongst our people?
You might be surprised to hear that 90% of porn literature (so called sex stories) on the web in india, are written by perverts with "wild imaginations" or so called "experiences" under such circumstances as a train journey.
I have even come across a few such written pieces woven into stories with the intention of titillating more such sick minds as spam emails, which I read for curiosity sake and ended up feeling sick.
I think his perverted mind knew his target.
It is not just one, but all of those reasons you mentioned. I have witnessed, read, heard abt many many such instances. Mind fucked and metally sick b@$&@rd$. Castrate them or kick them off to mentally ill homes?
I have travelled alone several times and I always take the upper berth. maybe thats why I have never faced such incident. U have raised valid questions which i think are the answers in themselves. But then even if sex education is given or sexual suppression is removed, there is no guarantee women will be safe!! there are some perverts who are born that way!
I have heard true tales how powerful politicians travel in first class coaches in a coupe all for themselves and sleep with women so as to not get caught.
Such perverts should be shot in one instant.
I feel sad and angry. Travelled a lot in long distance trains around delhi for work as a consultant a decade ago. Though i put up a brave face, always was scared inside.Always made sure not to wear salwars instead a pair of jeans/trousers and hair tied up; a backpack replaced the handbag (my handbag and laptop in the luggage).I did not want to be spotted as a woman, so easily. It gives me chills thinking about it now.I live in the west now, but the perverts are here too. I am worried for my kids, in general.
when do the becomes human beings and ceases to be just objects?
Each time I travelled by train-EACH TIME-since I can remember from the age of 15, I have been groped. Whether it was the lower berth, middle, upper, side lower, side upper, AC coupe, sleeper....whatever..
For the longest time I thought I was some kind of a sicko magnet....
At each instance, I got up and yelled at/grabbed/hit the intruder...I can't describe the fury I felt...i can remember the faces of almost all of these guys even today and I am almost 35..each incident would leave me shaken not just then, but for days...
I have had the same experience in MOST of my journeys in overnight buses-mangalore to bangalore etc...
Can you imagine the sheer number of perverts around?
I have never been provocatively dressed, or behaved in a titillating manner...but then who knows what is provocative/titillating behaviour in the minds of these people?
What is the solution? I am not sure. And I am kind of disppointed that I don't have a solution, because I would hate for my daughter to go through all of it.

Growing up in Tamil Nadu in the 70’s and 80’s, I have experienced indecent exposure several times as a young girl. Each time I felt a sense of shame and did not have the courage to talk to my parents or any adult. This kind of behavior existed even 30 years ago. Perverts have always been there and will be there always. I believe that girls and young women need to be taught about this at school and home. They should be empowered with knowledge of how to keep themselves safe and how to react to such situations. Boys and young men should go through such a curriculum too, so they can do their part in keeping the society safe. Media should expose such incidents, so perverts know that there is awareness among people and they cannot easily get away with such crimes.
I am constantly amazed as to how in India, we turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to such maladies in our society. I totally appreciate your thoughtfullness in writing about this issue!!
I always travel in the top bunk for this very reason.
Another thing that occurs to me from another cultures perspective: had I been the woman and that been the States (or even India for that matter), I would have raised HOLY HELL on the train that night.
And, had that been the States, I have total confidence that the man would have been found fifteen minutes later when ALL the lights were on and EVERYBODY was awake and would have been beaten to the ground.
By myself alone if I had too, (though I doubt it!)
It seems in India, that while the woman and her family might be outraged, most people around her seem to shrug it off with a "Well, what do you expect?" kind of attitude.
If it is not affecting *their* family, it's not their problem.
Whereas here I EXPECT the people around me to stand up with me.
But hey, it's no joke Americans are violent!
Well..whoever is in charge....such incidents are deplorable.
I always feel that our society is totally repressed, hypocritical and morally bankrupt. The more we adopt a Victorian we-are-so-holy stance, the more our repressed young men find unacceptable outlets for their sexuality.
This is really bad. Atleast AC compartments should be safe enough. I always hope I get the top berth, coz I am scared of such incidents. Whenever I sleep on the lower berth, I feel so insecure that I can't sleep. Dunno when situation gets better.
Hi, its truly sad. So much for the moral brigade who is obsessed with pubs and western attire being the culprit. Shame on us that we allow such sort of maladies to do the rounds in India. And above all, they get re elected and soundly justify their stance. Even pitiable is the fact that these days even the so called educated elite fall prey to the vocal BS that they deliver. These thugs are everywhere. The law needs to be more stringent . Above all, people have to be more vigilant and active. Passive tolerance has somehow become the norm these days. Anyways, on a closing note, if girls celebrating their bday in a pub can't be publicly spared, how much would one expect in a closed AC compartment. Its all the same everywhere. After all, we are all "Cultured".
Shame indeed.
Worse, not uncommon.
Worst, when the victim protests or cries out, most people will look away or stay put as though to imply, "hey tough luck, can't do much, thank god it ain't me".
This is indeed a deplorable state of affairs... It's not just during long journeys that such incidents occur... Even a short 2 or 2.5 hour journey at a peak hour can leave a woman seething with fury at an invasion of her personal space...
It's not easy to have a sure shot solution at all times to such incidents, but I strongly feel that women should not take this kind of a behaviour silently.
One woman raising her voice might give another the courage to raise her voice too !!

i read in india today abt d mind of a rapist..he does so cze of mainly 3 reasons- acction, power, saddism....
its so sad to see how indian youth are emerging....and system ki to baat hi nahi ki jaa sakti....
Very sad and frustrated to read about this. Just thinking if this is the case in an AC coach, what about the others. My mom had her chain while travelling in a night train, just when she opened the window glass as the station was nearing. She saved her chain but got a thick scar on her neck.
This is so horrible. Having a daughter myself, hearing about such incidents makes me so paranoid and she is just 3 years old.
Avan kattaiyila poga
I dont think this has any link of lack of sex education or lack of proper interaction with opposite sex.. its for sure is pervetism and it can be found in society where there is lot more freedom than india.. But yeah the guard as you know will never be there ... i travel only in common sleeper class where when the daylight is over you can never see TTR checking tickets and all kind of people getting in.
Once there was a guy who was sitting in my seat after i went to buy biscuits in a stop at a station. When i requested him to move as i need to sleep he was all over me and complaining why am i so sick to sleep even when its already morning(6.30 am).. As i irritated i virtually had a fight with him for my place all the while not TTR....
Very very sad Usha . I sit with my heart in my mouth every time my daughter takes a train to Delhi where she studies .I also cannot fathom what make young men from middle class families act the way this boy did . Its reprehensible and indicates a total breakdown in the ethical and moral values we knew .
Despicable...as one of the commenter asks what drives these perverts??
..its the archaic laws that make the victims not want to pursue recourse..
This is a very unfortunate incident. I'm not knowledgeable enough to speculate as to causes for such things.
One comment I want to make is related to this often cited point about India's "great culture, history and morality".
I think this problem of eve teasing and lack of safety for women is related to the fact that dishonesty and cheating is all pervasive in India. Is there any aspect of life in India where people don't cheat? I couldn't think of any - food stuffs are adulterated, government corruption is legendary, banks will give you bad loans in return for bribes, bus conductors will re-use / not issue tickets, autowallas and taxi drivers take every opportunity to cheat you, students cheat on exams, teachers sell exam papers, vice chancellors sell recognition to universities, so called "swamijis" cheat poor people ... the list goes on an on.
From when we are kids, we see people doing "wrong" and getting away with it. Perhaps this has to do with why people in an AC compartment do such disgusting things. Because they know they _can_ and they _will_ and they _did_ get away with it.
Our culture is great? Our moral standards are high? Sorry, I call bullshit. The reality is that we have the lowest standards for morality and honesty in the whole world.
And all this in the country of Gandhi and Tagore. They'd be weeping tears of blood if they were alive now.
This is terrible. Is there any place where women are safe? Much molestation takes place within the home. And yet we continue to blame women for venturing out. The railways must get their act together to ensure safety on our trains, in all classes.
its indeed terrible. i remember travelling as a teenager in an overnight bus and being groped in my sleep by guy sitting on a seat in the aisle.
but i was too young to make a noise about it! eventually living in Mumbai, i just learnt to tae care of myself! thrashed a few guys and kept going...
but thats not the solution really...
I've been thinking of writing a post on the perversions of the human mind and i think I'll take it up soon.In this case a psychiatrist may use explain this to be a case of the human mind wanting to explore the body of the opposite sex or sexual abuse at an early age to be the cause for thhe working of a perverted mmind.all very fine as long as one is not the victim but should one be at the receiving end one begins to suffer from a low self esteem with others tending to blame the victim rather than the perpetrator.
Sick sick sick indeed. The worst part is that this is not uncommon. We all should travel with pepper sprays...but what use is that when you are sleeping?
I used to travel from Tvm to Hyd and Mum to hyd to Mum very often and each time I switched to an upper berth if I didnt get one, and still felt unsafe.
Very Sick !! Have had similar incidents when I was in 10th grade and that too travelling with my parents. Sickos, I tell you. Somehow, I have found it more prominent in TN. What a pity!! Anyway, I am always extra careful whenver I travel anywhere and I have avoided train journeys as much as I Can.
Very sad state.. And i guess there is no way to predict where you are safe and where not.
I have faced a similar attempt in a domestic flight a couple of years back. I was alone and travelling for work. Settling down to a slumber on the window seat, i could feel the passenger behind me having his hand creep through the gap btn the seat and window, and it was lightly holding my arm.. i was alarmed and straigtened my seat up.. after some time when i had given my co-passenger the benefit of doubt that perhaps it was an unintentional accident after all i'm in an airplane, it happened again. This time since my seat was straight up, there was no chance of an accidental brush up.
This time i stood up, looked straight at the person behind me and told in a low voice 'please watch your hand'. there was no response at all.. (now i dont remember how he looked, but there was nothing different from the typical airport hoppers) and hit the button for the crew. However I did not have the courage to report this and asked for water. The flight was packed and I would not have got a change of seat. Thankfully, rest of the journey went uneventful, though I could not relax for a second. Not sure what I could have done if the act had repeated..
So, no matter which public place we are in - from a crammed city bus to an airplane, can never be off-guard..AND, gotto wear a bitchy look.. perhaps a cycle chain wrapped around the fist too..
Very rightly put forth. Our trains, buses and public transport are filled with povert people like this who despite being from good strata of income, married, still sex freaks.
It has beocme very embarassing to travel with such beasts around...and they are plenty...
You know what we should do, have a common law punishment in place. Whenever we catch some of these perverts red-handed, we issue a common-law punishment as a deterrent. Humiliation is what will get them to bow down I feel.
1. Put him up on display, with name, age, profession and family (if he has wife and kids (don't name them but mention how many he has) ).
2. Send a letter to his work place about the kind of perverse action he has been resorting to.
3. Get hold of his orkut/facebook profile and scrap him to no end mentioning what a pervert he is.
This may probably get him the 'publicity" he does not want.
Taking up such people to the law enforcement is a painful process. It is probably easier to get their names out there.
Lets think of some more.
This problem is not new. Had existed for ages, I mean the molestation thing. This is not unique to India. Exists in the Western society too...maybe in some other form. A 17 year old rapes a 73 year old! something like this...
Every time one happens, we feel outraged, sick. Try to vent our anger by suggesting severe, violent punishment to the offenders.
But all the while we have been dealing in treating the symptoms rather than the cause.
Who is to blame? The media? Educators? The Railways? Authorities? The parents? Peers?
In the end...if we look deeper, We are all responsible! For growing a society that has all these defects.
So, what do we do now to treat the cause, rather than the symptom?
Hi all,
Thanks for sharing your experiences. I am shocked that this is a regular occurence and so many of you seem to have experienced something similar. In all my years of train travel this is the first time I witnessed something like this and I was outraged.
Since we cannot depend on the Railways to ensure our protection perhaps we should take turns to keep vigil during the night and catch these guys.
I think we should raise hell when this happens. As Poonam said we should humiliate them publicly so others do not dare try it ever again.
Let us not suffer these in silence.Let us raise our voice in protest. That is the first step in countering such perverts.
very pathetic.
makes me feel so helpless.
we can blame the TV, internet everything for this perversion in our youth but these problems existed before also.
it is the male libidio and their inability to control their carnal desires and needs which forces them to insult and humilate women like this.
what you have described happened in night but what about thousands of incidence of back pinching or accidental touching of woman in buses and trains in broad day light?
till the male populaion learns to respect woman and treat her with admiration and also when the elders teach the young ones the importance of women we will have to bear this humilation all throuh
Usha, like you I have never experienced this kind of thing in all my years of train travel either. But you know, the boy may have been thinking of grabbing her chain and when she woke up he did that to her.
But this kind of think has happened to me and my friends, when I studied in Delhi in the early 70s--on the bus,(not student specials tho) in theatres, even while walking as a gang through campus!
I have had one experience of being robbed of everything I had in an acIII tier coach, travelling from Calcutta to Bhopal. Waking up in the morning I found that somebody had just walked away with all my luggage, I came bk home carrying just the book I was reading!!
It is very sad but how can you blame the Indian railways for the lack of security? Do you think the IR should place one policeman in front of each berth? It is the society to blame.
Are the purnas and hindu religion which idolizes people like krishna with 1000s of gfs and dasaratha with 60k wives to blame?
Usha,
I read this post the day you posted.. was really busy and couldn't post comment..
I had to come back and write this comment.
My 1st train journey was when I was a 3 months old baby and from then until I moved to the US I have travelled in trains probably a 500 times ... the last 10 years was travelling alone as a student and then as a working girl..
Being hit on by guys was very normal .. and they used to get my name and age from the reservation chart posted on the outside of the compartment and either try to start a conversation and when i ignore them be the typical street side romeos .. that was still ok ...
The one incident that was the scariest of all was ...
I had boarded Bangalore-TVM express from cantonment station and i was listening to my IPOD and reading a book .. there were 2 girls(foreigners) in the same boggie ... the train hadn't started .. there was a guy who was very decently dressed ... ( wore very good shoes .. i had read somewhere that u can judge a guy by his shoes .. that is so wrong ..)
anyways he was restless .. walking to and fro across the seat .. calling someone on mobile .. sometimes sitting next to me .. sometime opposite me .. i assumed he was waiting for someone ...
once through my peripheral vision i thought he was scratching his crotch area and i thought he is just one of those "no manners guys who scratches his private area in public and doesn't care much .."..
i was in the lower berth and one of the girls was in the upper birth and dropped her pouch .. i dropped to pick that and what do i see .. the guys was masturbating and was cumming .. his thing was out ...
can u imagine that scene ... it was a normal compartment .. there was 20-30 minutes for the train to depart and people were coming and going .. can u imagine his guts ...
as soon as i saw that i shouted at the top of my voice .. the 2 girls too jumped down .. the guy ran away :-(
there were 2 army guys in the compartment - they ran after him .. but he was gone already ...
i don't know why .. but i was crying non-stop ... to this day i feel bad that instead of grabbing hm by the collar and handing over to the police i just froze and cried and let him go away ...
but i guess most girls when they have to tell such eve-teasing stories - will have more frozen moments than having reacted stories ...
can u imagine how the rest of my journey would have been .. his semen was still on the floor ...
he was not even a passenger ...
he just came in to the compartment to fulfil his urges ...
F**** .. a****...
i still don't understand what pleasure such guys get doing this ...
anyways Usha .. this is the most scariest first hand experience story that I have about my train journey experiences...
Anamika ...
Sorry for the typos and the grammatical errors in the above comment..
I know your love for the english language ...:-)
Even though this happened 3 years back .. I could feel the same anger as I was writing the comment and didn't check for typos and published the comment right away ....
OMG!!! even i used to use AC compartments for safety. This is sooo very sad..
It is the sad state of affairs in our country ; a country that prides itself on traditions and honor. Deep rooted in that traditional is an attitude that turns a blind eye to atrocities like these by perverts. I commend the lady for taking the fight up to the lecher. We need more of her.
As an aside, whether clad in a 9 yard saree head to toe, or a western outfit, our society needs to learn to respect personal choices and boundaries.
A sad, sad incident. And unfortunately, not a rare occurence.
Having said that, I couldn't help noticing a couple of comments that talk about how the same happened to them 'even though they weren't provocatively dressed'. Which makes me wonder if anyone dressed 'provocatively' has it coming if they were to be molested.
Anamika: I am shocked to hear about your experience. What can you do with such shameless people?
Anon: If providing adequate security involves placing a guard who walks around the compartments in the night ensuring safety of the passengers well, that is the solution.
We could not even find the guard to complain to. Usually the guy gets a berth in one of the a/c coaches.
Ammani: I think they were referring to the standard assumption that girls in tight or revealing dresses are the ones who provoke these rogues to molest them.
You know some schools impose dress codes on their women students based on this assumption!
Interesting post!! Thanks to all for sharing !!!
Namaste,
Your post reminded me of a shameful incident that happened when I was 15. Reading this brought back that event to life.
We were traveling from Bangalore to Bombay- me, my grandma and my younger sister.
Memory is a bit hazy since it was 30 years ago, but I still am the same. Two berths were allocated in one bay and 1 in the adjacent bay. I was the tomboy and chose the adjacent bay, and very excited because of the top berth.
It was not an AC coupe but regular coach. Sometime in the middle of the night, I was woken by a strange feeling- I was a half awake, I felt someone stroking my butt. Immediatly I shot up and looking down saw this very ordinary, fat, sad looking, middle aged perv. The defilement I felt still stays.
Now I have a 15 yr old daughter and I will not have her on a train unless it is a coupe and all berths are used up by family.
I haven't breathed about this to anyone, but this email dredged this incident from memory.
Such incidents are scary and make women lose confidence in themselves, in society and in honor.
A frequent reader.
It's a pity this had happen. But there is little that the railway could have done or could do now. It's more about the general mentality people have in our community. Sex-ed in school probably is the first-step towards correcting this. But come-what-may, perverts and paedophiles are bound to exist.
I have been a follower of a blog since 2 yrs now.... but i have never left any comments....
This post brought to mind the recent incident that i came across forcing me to comment..
A month ago my niece (a pretty 10yr old) was travelling from pune to bangalore... She was alloted the side lower berth.. On coming home she told that she faced the same things that you've described in your blog.... The sorry part was that she is too young to understand the seriousness of the issue.... Since this was a first encounter of any such incident, we taught her to scream, bite, yell and kick such perverts in the groin.... Such perverts must be shot at!!
Absolutely horrendous and sends shudders down the spine...The blame is squarely on the selfish society which complacently sits back and watches just because it is happening to 'someone else'. These perverts with double standards..mothers and sisters at home, to be revered and adored and idolized, play objects outside the four walls to be ridiculed and leered at. Yuck ! The ignominy of it all !!!
