April 29 was observed as international noise awareness day but in this country the problem seemed to have got drowned in the deafening noise of vehicles and people.
Proposals for a honk-free day were met with appropriate snickers and skepticism. A friend told me that everyday he only checks the horn in his vehicle to make sure it works - everything else is not an issue if the horn works. I think he was only half-joking and I think he is not alone in this. Noise levels in our cities are reaching annoying levels and what is even more scary is that no one seems to mind. We seem to have adapted to this even at the expense of our health.

No wonder Usha, I can see it, if you have to make/take a call in the midst of traffic, all you can hear is just shouting at 2 ends. And you wonder if you have gone dumb or what.Lol at the horn working things, so apt for today's situation.
In spite of 'no honking' and 'silent zones' signs put up there seem to be no respite to the commoners.
Let’s hope there'll be a new beginning somewhere.

'Get noticed.'
yup we seem 2 have adapted to this and to avoid this we use ipod or mp3 players....as they say we dont react until thing reaches beyond our control....den there will be few rallies saying protect earth and all, it will be on paper for few days and den things will back as dey were before....
Last week I spent some time in a small town in Kerala and was amazed by the silence that exists there. Actually it is "pin drop silence" on the streets at any time of day. I felt a little abnormal, to be honest without all the din of the city life.
City's No Honking Day ends in noisy failureAnd did'nt I text u something related to bikes-breaks and finally HORNS!! recently?? :D
PS: The link to blogbharathi is'nt working.
Hush!
and oh for some peace and quiet !
(Sorry it ought to have been the same mail, my butter fingers)
In USA one hardly hears any honking for the simple reason that most people follow rules. We in India have to honk to warn buffaloes, stray dogs adventurous kids in two wheelers and what not. After a while it becomes a habit.Like my son noticed when he was here recently and said - 'you seem to press the horn every little while even if there is no one on the road'.i realized that what he said was true. I've been trying hard to get over the habit.
An interesting read! Reminds me of how people swear by the ‘ten days in silence’ technique of meditation (vipasana) for self-observation and connecting to oneself. Apparently our sense of self is one of those things that get drowned in all the noise.
Hi Usha,
How have you been. Coming back here after a long time. Haven't seen you on my blog for some time.
I feel honking can become an addiction. For most drivers it's a habit. I have been driving around, without using horn. Hope some day our streets will become sound free.

I didn't know there was an International Noise Awareness Day! Think that is highly needed in India.
the link is showing some error..
please post it here too...
Yes, if we all decide to move to the Himalayas, it will become noisy over there too! So, atleast let there be one place which is noise free. There is also a Temple in Coimbatore called Dhyanalingam Shiva Temple and no one is allowed to speak inside this temple. It is wonderful and completely noise free.
